This essay challenges the idea that English, through different ways of art, makes the language learning process a lot more interesting for students of English as a foreign language (EFL). It examines first why interactive classes are better or more productive than most of the classes at the present time which are basically about English patterns and structures. Then it points out that painting, poetry, music or some others are very good ways to learn English according to what it should be developed during an language process or according to the students’ need. It contends further that “English through art” would help teachers get along well with theirs students, having a comfortable environment to work and also making students cooperate or work together. It concludes that learning English through a work of art allows students not only to utilize grammar and vocabulary but also to use their creativity, which is a fundamental joy of using a language.
English teachers have lots of problems when they’re actually trying to teach so that it is very important to make classes attractive in order to motivate students. In addition, project- based classes is an efficient way to teach and taking into account what some students need to develop during an language learning process, “art” would definably be the perfect tool. (2005) Showed that when students work together on a writing assignment that includes poetry, which is a medium to spark emotions, they learn from each other and edit each other’s mistakes. At the same time the change in the routine which can be motivating for students who dislike writing, 3, 36-37. The previous example is maybe limited to improve only the writing part through poetry if we just refer to the skills that English learners should work on. But there are also other works of art that allow students practice their English. Eleanor Madden claims that paintings often offer a richer, more complete, and conventional visual cue than other art forms such as sculpture or contemporary video installation. In short, Interpreting visual art, whether it’s modern and minimalist or renaissance and elaborate, can be an excellent way to teach productive skills and build a lexicon.
Painting, poetry, pottery or even music goes very well as English learning activities. You can use a number of activities to teach English through art. As M. Morley insists in her article about art projects to learn English, there are bunch of activities like “Color your description” which consists on an effective way to teach color vocabulary as well as descriptive words. “Drawing for tone and voice” that have students read different texts (the author’s tone and voice allows students to get a mental image of what he is like). “Modern art and culture” that is an engaging way to encourage students to discuss culture and learn vocabulary. These are just a few activities that the author shows on her article taking into account that art has an amazing capacity to make learning interesting.
Clearly, art has had a great effect on the way some people learn English and I do not claim that English is one of the easiest subjects to study for some people. On the contrary, it is a very hard subject taking into account all of the skills that need to be developed during English classes so that would students speak it properly. According to that, teachers need to motivate their students by using activities that allow them to express themselves and use their creativity. Art is the best way to do it. Nonetheless, there are teachers or students who dislike this method so it is important to let students show what they really like and see if it is possible to include those likes in class. Only further, this method examinations will show how effective art can be when it us used to teach or learn English.
